Combining leadership in research, scientific expertise, advanced tools & algorithms, and advanced cyberinfrastructure ecosystems, RDI² is strategically positioned to engage leading academic and industry researchers in innovative, interdisciplinary collaborations. Since its founding, RDI² has engaged in interdisciplinary research with researchers throughout Rutgers University, as well as with researchers at a wide array of universities, national laboratories and industries across New Jersey, the US, and internationally.

RDI² has led many strategic ACI initiatives, including the National Science Foundation Ocean Observatories Initiative - CyberInfrastructure (OOI), the NSF Virtual Data Collaboratory (VDC) and the NSF Regional Cyberinfrastructure for Collaborative Data Intensive Science (DIBBS). The institude has also led ACI leadership both at the university and throughout the state, including the establishment of the Rutgers Office of Advanced Research and Computing (OARC) and the establishment of the New Jersey Big Data Alliance (NJBDA).

RDI² currently serves 27 departments, 12 schools and 5 campuses. In addition to government sponsors—such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the Department of Energy (DOE)a non-exhaustive list of industry partners includes IBM, Ericsson, and XEROX.
